Charlie joined the Metro business as Managing Director in 2014 following a long and fruitful association with DMG Media.
He first caught the attention of DMGT in 1992 after turning around the fortunes of LBC Radio and was quickly brought in to expand the Group’s broadcast interest as head of DMG Radio, an international business owning more than 70 radio stations as well as millions of pounds in broadcast investments. Charlie orchestrated the highly successful sale of the division in 2000.
Since then, Charlie’s connections with the DMGT family have continued, as a Director of media companies and on a wide variety of projects including Metro Play, Local TV and Teletext.
Charlie’s career in the media industry spans more than three decades. He originally trained as a broadcast journalist with the Fairfax organisation in Australia. Having worked as a journalist and broadcaster for a variety of media companies, he returned to Fairfax, where he became both National News director of Australia’s biggest network, as well as manager of Macquarie Radio’s flagship Sydney radio station 2GB.
His broadcast interests continue at board level on several digital radio multiplex companies – including two of the three commercial operations in London – and he is also non-executive Chairman of Jensen Interceptor cars.
Charlie is also an accomplished racing driver with three British Class Championships to his name. As well, he partnered the legendary Murray Walker as his expert co-commentator on the British Touring Car Championship, and continued as a TV motorsports broadcaster for the BBC for 17 years alongside his business career.
